Drum Solo with Nanna Candelaria - belly dance

Nanna explains the fundamentals in optimizing and maintaining full and lucid shimmies, clear crisp accents, fast paced footwork, and exhilarating rhythmic combinations. A thorough breakdown of basic movements is intended to introduce the steps to beginning dancers. And a
sophisticated approach to subjects such as muscle control, proper alignment, and proper distribution of strength aid in defining and perfecting movement for dancers of all levels.

This DVD ultimately teaches a full drum solo choreography with a drill section of each component to aid in your progression towards a new level of dance.

Hi everyone,
my birthday is coming up mid-January and my sister and I are wanting to take a little road trip around Nor-Cal and find some fantastic and/or terrific :) bellydance stores. I know about Empress in Placerville and while it is a wonderful store, the only thing i can purchase there is a hip scarf since nothing else fits me (or my sister). As I have a multitude of hip scarves I would like to find some stores that carry bellydance supplies that are above a size small. I have really gotten into sword dancing lately and would LOVE to find a store with dancing swords since I am a bit reluctant to purchase that kind of an item online. My sister and I are more tribal than cabaret but love a little of everything.
So I am looking to all of you to throw me out some names or towns that have supplies at the ready. PLEASE!!!! Also, if anyone can tell me if they have ordered from Audrena (online store) or visited Cost Less Beads in Berkeley and if they are reputable places to go through I would truly appreciate it.
I live just outside of Stockton and don't mind driving, we're planning on making it a day trip or maybe stay overnight in an inexpensive hotel if need be so throw out as many suggestions as come to mind...
Thank you ladies soooooo much in advance I know it is going to be a truly magical birthday trip!
Happy dancing, Tracy
P.S. Feel free to include mystical/wiccan/pagan shops as well, we love those too!!!!!!

Tribal Fest’s first ever “Tribal Bellydance Jam Band”.

Here is the deal... We are trying something new this year at TF. An open dance floor with a Jam! The vision is we have a core group of players and people join in and dancers do their thing..

Introducing the “Tribal Fest Jam Band”! Jeremiah Soto of Solace, Jeff Rees from Gypsy Caravan and Mizna and August Hoerr of The Mezmer Society (see bios below)

They will take the Tribal Fest stage and invite anyone who would like to come play with them to come up. Like a great drum circle! This is your chance to come up and jam with some of the most outstanding musicians in the bellydance scene today!

Bring your drum, your zills, your mizmar WHATEVER!!! Join them on-stage and add to the sound and excitement. Don’t be shy!! When will you have the chance to do this again??!!

Everyone is welcome to join in. Dancers, do you have a hubby or partner who plays something? This is their chance to be apart of the show!

Now if THAT weren’t enough excitement, of course it is an “Open Floor Dance Time”!!

Time for all you Tribal dancers to get up and show the world that you can dance as one. Improv at it’s finest!

Doesn’t matter what “style” you do or how long you have been dancing. Come on stage, or in front of the stage for an awesome open floor with what will be the best Tribal Jam Band ever to jam on a stage.

This will go down in history!

Jeremiah Soto
Jeremiah has been composing music since 1986 and has evolved through several genres of music including Industrial, Gothic, Electronic, Contemporary World and currently Middle Eastern Dance music. Arabic percussion has always been a fascination of Jeremiah's and he has studied with renowned dumbek master Souhail Kaspar as well as learned African polyrhythms and frame drum technique from Ronnie Engel. After being in groups such as Kokuein, Eventide, and Still, Jeremiah embarked on a solo
project, thus forming Solace in 1995.
www.soundsofsolace.com/solace/

Jeff Rees
Jeff’s first exposure to learning a musical instrument was playing the accordion and clarinet as a young boy. Jeff’s music took a big turn when he joined Paulette’s newly formed tribal bellydance troupe, the Gypsy Caravan. From travels and research he started playing the zurna from Turkey, the ney and the mijwiz from Egypt, and created the distinct sound of the Gypsy Caravan band. He now plays a vast assortment of horns and percussion, also including the Egyptian rababa, the Indian shruti box, the Armenian dudek, and the Australian didgeridoo.
Playing with Gypsy Caravan, Jeff also started a new band, Mizna, who released their first CD of tribal bellydance music in 2006. Touring the world with Paulette and Gypsy has been an enormously rewarding experience, as he has had the opportunity to play with musicians and for dancers in many other states and countries. With Gypsy and Mizna, Jeff has recorded nine CDs and various films and DVDs. He has made guest appearances on several CDs outside of Gypsy, including playing with Domba, Solace, and Americanistan. Playing music is Jeff’s meditation, his passion, and his art; he plays from his heart and soul.
www.gypsycaravan.us/mizna.php

August Hoerr, Accordionist
August taught himself to play accordion as angsty teenager, and after discovering Middle Eastern music, began working with Tribal dancers in 1999. Discovering a mutual interest in Balkan music and quirky party songs, he formed The Mezmer Society with Onça (Baraka Mundi) in the Autumn of 2007. They have taught and performed at events including Tribal Fest, TribalCon, and Tribal Revolution, and they are scheduled to continue touring throughout the United States. The Mezmer Society is fully committed to spreading the aesthetic of hafla joy as quickly and loudly as possible.
In addition to to The Mezmer Society, August is a member of the quartet Ashes in Order, and maintains a career as an internationally represented figurative painter. He is the president of the Institute for the Advancement of Occultism and Aerophonics (previously Asheville Accordion Club), and he has released albums with the cinematic trio Soora Gameela, and Greek fusion band Makari. August lives in Asheville, North Carolina and is currently working on material for his first solo album.

Haven't had any luck running across people here in Santa Rosa that share the same interest and looking for a way to get involved. I know there is a class at a local dance studio about once a week, however I was wanting to find local people that want to do it outside of a class you have to pay for.

The Casbah Lounge, Evening of Middle Eastern Dance Dec. 6th!

The next Casbah Lounge, Evening of Middle Eastern Dance at Annabelle's Chocolate Lounge near Placerville, CA, is December 6th.
This show is produced by Vahana's "Hips are for Healing" and is in its second year running.

It is always a charitable event with this evening's donations going to Animal Outreach of the Motherlode.

The December show is traditionally the "alternative" music show, so while you can still dance to Middle Eastern music, you can also branch out in December if you want to try something different. (no profanity, please.)

Contact Vahana if you would like to dance or for more information.

dancingesquire@yahoo.com

Since tribe isn't really reliable, I started a new group for the Casbah Lounge:

Hello ladies!
I'm relocating to the area Nov. 1st.
Instead of trying to rent from some random person on Craigslist, I thought i'd check here first and see if there were any 'like minded' individuals who needed a roomate.
I'm looking to pay $450 a month max, including utilities.
I'm also looking for a pet friendly household, as i have a 4 yr old chihuahua.

If you know of anything let me know!
Please respond to:
Bellydance Swapmeet near Sacramento

I used to got to Anaheed's Bellydance Swapmeets in the Valley when I lived in L.A. They were a great place to find cool costume supplies inexpensively as dancers brought what they didn't want and sold it to buy what they wanted.

So, I am putting together a Bellydance Swapmeet for Sunday, April 27th, in Placerville, before the Brothers of the Baladi show. 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

My plan is to have dancers bring whatever they no longer want - costumes, skirts, coverups, hip scarves, whatever they want to sell. I want to keep it by dancers for dancers, so no large commercial vendors.

Cost for vending space would be very minimal - $5 to $10 max. You would probably need to bring your own table, but I am looking into that.

The Swapmeet would be walking distance to the Brothers of the Baladi show at Cozmic Cafe where I am performing, along with Namira, Salome, and Cintia.

Classes by Nanna Candelaria
@ The Suhaila Salimour School of Dance
http://bellydancebynanna.com/instruction.html
10082 San Pablo Ave. El Cerrito , CA 94530
http://therealsuhaila.com/classes_location.htm

Nanna will offer expert knowledge on the means to becoming a solo dancer, highlighting individual style, personal expression and character, with an emphasis on core strength, solid skills, form, and proper alignment.
Subject matter will be reviewed in 10 week cycles. Because both classes correspond in weekly subject matter, simultaneous attendance of both classes is likened to a mini-course on the subject(s) of focus. A class guide and itinerary to weekly topics is distributed to class members and is available upon request.

Class 1. - Mondays @ 6:30 – 7:45 pm. - Essential Movements
Core movements, Technique, and Essentials in Nanna's Belly Dance Method
Each class entails an intensive and concentrated study of primary components, such as: Drum Solo Technique, Isolations, Use of Arms, Footwork & Layering.

Class 2. - Mondays @ 8:00 – 9:15 pm. - Creative Combinations
Musical Understanding, Interpretation, and Dynamics are developed through Combinations and Choreographies. Tools and exercises in Projection and Creative Interpretation are introduced. Nanna's Drum Solo's, Finger Cymbal, and Veil Dance's will be taught, along with Dances to Traditional and Modern, Arabic and Non Arabic Music.

Class Card $150 for 10 classes – Expires in 90 days
Drop In $18
Nanna’s classes are autonomous to Suhaila’s school
Therefore Suhaila’s class cards do not apply.

Flaming Sword Kits available for a limited time

Flaming Sword Kit by Amy Luna
as seen in the DVD "By Dancers For Dancers, Volume 1"

While cleaning out my closet, I found some extra flaming sword kits leftover from when I taught my flaming sword workshop at the Crucible's Fire Arts Festival a couple of years ago. The effect is a 4-5 inch flame that stays lit on the very tip of the end of your sword while you dance,

To view a photo of the effect go to http://www.amyluna.com/flamingsword.jpg

To view a video of the effect, go to http://www.amyluna.com/bdfd1.html

Simple, safe, portable, and with no modifications to your precious sword. Quick and easy prep makes this a dancer's dream when hurriedly preparing for your show in that cramped dressing room. Everything you need for dozens of performances. Also includes tips on costume and fire safety, of course.

Testimonial:
"Thank you so much for the wonderful "flaming sword" workshop. I hadn't had the nerve to try it out until last Sunday at our student night at El Morocco. Everyone enjoyed it & the flame stayed flamed up the entire performance. It was too cool & I'm so glad it worked - your instructions & tips were great!" - Malilka

$40 + $3.50 s & h

please email me or Paypal me at amyluna@amyluna.com if you are interested. I don't know when or if I'll make more kits and I'm getting ready to travel out of the country for a few months so...get 'em while they're hot 'cause when they're gone, they're gone! Good luck!

Nomadiqa Ethnic Fusion and Arabesque Beats - Repost

Hi Folks,
We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

Hope to hear from you.

Many thanks,
NEW Performance Workshops with Liz Strong, Ariellah, Cera, & More start THIS WEEK! San Francisco

Hey all,
My new studio, ShoeBox Studio, opened Friday night with a host of great bellydance performances.
Now the real fun begins!

We are offering performance workshops (6 week workshops that end with a student showcase at a local theater) taught by Liz Strong, Ariellah, and myself, and ongoing weekly fusion technique class with Gibson Pearl.
You can just take drop in if you dont want to perform (though it's cheaper if you register for all 6 weeks in advance - and come on! the stage is half the fun!)
These will be small and personal - workshops max out at 15 people (you can register online), and you will get hands-on attention from each of these amazing teachers.
The dates are Nov. 5th-Dec. 14th (performance Dec. 14th @ 8pm)
I hope some of you can make it! I am so honored to have these incredible artists teaching at the ShoeBox, and I cant wait to see all of the choreographies on the stage!
Bellydance classes in or near Redwood City?

Hello all you beautiful dancers!

I just moved in with my love in Redwood City. I'm looking for classes nearby (within a 20 minute drive).

I generally gravitate toward fusion, tribal style belly dance. But I'm open to other styles, if my preference isn't locally available.

I used to live in SF and took classes with Jill Parker of Ultra Gypsy, and Kristina Canizares of The Nekyia.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Gael

SIS Annual Event

Hello all. Some of your have asked if we are having our Annual Theme Party and Belly Dance Competition and we have decided to not continue. Here is a paragraph from our web page and the link.

The wonderful Art of Belly Dance has become SO popular over the years and we are all growing and blossoming because of it. There is a popular trend, so many people are hosting events. Although this is a great way to share this art with the world, it has spread the attendance a bit thin. Some weekends are filled with as many as 3 or 4 events, making it just too difficult to see them all. Great local events like Rakkasah, Belly Dancer of the Year and Desert Dance Festival are set every year. We will put our energy into supporting the many long standing events in our area and will not continue with the Sirens In Sanity Theme Party & Belly Dance Competition in years to come. For all those who attended and supported our event, WE THANK YOU SO MUCH. We had a blast and we know you did as well. :)Saiedeh & Yasmine

www.sirensinsanity.com/sis/si...ts.html

Thank you so much for asking and supporting us over the years.
Please spread the word. We'll hope to see you all real soon.
:)Yasmine & Saiedeh and all the Sirens of Sirens In Sanity

Dance opportunity in Sacramento

Marrakech restaurant is looking for professional dancers for Friday and Saturday evening shows.
http://www.marrakechrestaurant.com
1833 Fulton Ave, Sacramento
95825

Professional is defined in these limited terms as:
- not a student (5+ years experience) preferable with a mentor to show how to perform in a public setting.
- have high end, well maintained costumes. You'll need more than one costume.
- quality sounding music on CD. The music should be a "set", each being 20 min. in length.
- nice appearance, including makeup, and hair.
- reliable and on time. This also includes being easily reachable via telephone or email.

Would prefer a dancer who has experience with restaurant dancing and is good with an American audience.
The restaurant pays very low wages (due to a local teacher, Jodette, who keeps the rates low by sending out her student dancers to all the local restaurants) but the tips are usually very good.

Marrakech does not allow body tipping and the dancer must provide her own tipping pot/basket.
Any belly dance style is welcomed. From traditional to tribal, as long as you are a great entertainer and professional.

Please email me if you have futher questions or if you are available.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DESERT DANCE FESTIVAL WELCOMES AZIZA!

San Jose, CA - Scarab Productions announces the addition of Aziza to the 2007 DDF workshop and performer line-up!

Aziza’s addition to the festival line-up was announced this month at Cairo Nights with Aziza (a Bellydance Odyssey Production event). As a world class instructor and entertainer, her international appeal and demand continue to increase and she is considered one of the finest dancers in the art today. Aziza is recognized for her innovative teaching style (which is highlighted by her clarity and approachability) and her elegant interpretation and presentation of the dance.

As part of DDF’s evolution, Dunia, the festival founder, and her committee continue to focus on finding new artists to bring their love of the dance and give new flavor and workshops for fans to enjoy. When asked about Aziza’s addition to the line-up, Dunia said; “What better way to celebrate 22 years and an exciting new location than to have Aziza join our 2007 family!” Dunia is proud to present Aziza as a part of the new Desert Dance Festival. Join us for a weekend of workshops and a Gala performance at this year’s event!

About Aziza:

Aziza currently splits her time between the Pacific Northwest and Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Dancing since the age of three, Aziza has a strong background in classical ballet. After twelve years of ballet study and performance, Aziza began experimenting with other dance forms including African, Modern, Lyrical Jazz, and Tahitian. In 1988 she was introduced to Middle Eastern Dance and found it to be the ideal medium. Since that time, Aziza has devoted her life to learning, performing, and sharing this ancient art form.
